About the Kala KA-SEM

Kala's Exotic Mahogany series is a cosmetic rather than tonal upgrade: the top, back and sides are mahogany like Kala's standard soprano ukuleles, but cut and selected specifically for unusual grain figuring - curly, flamed, streaked or spotted patterns not present in plainer mahogany. The rest of the build follows Kala's standard soprano spec: mahogany neck, walnut fingerboard, GraphTech NuBone nut and saddle, and black body binding to frame the figured wood.

At a 13.625-inch scale and 12 frets, it's a traditional-proportioned soprano rather than an extended-range or long-neck variant, finished in an amber satin that lets the wood's figuring show through clearly. Silver nickel frets and die-cast tuners complete the hardware, strung with Aquila Super Nylgut strings as stock equipment.

Sound character of the Kala KA-SEM

The figured grain is purely cosmetic - tonally this behaves like any standard all-mahogany soprano: warm, balanced fundamentals from the mahogany body with the characteristically bright, plinky top-end that small soprano-sized bodies produce regardless of wood grain pattern.

The history of the Kala KA-SEM

The Exotic Mahogany line lets Kala offer a visually distinctive instrument within its existing soprano production without introducing a new tonewood or construction method, a common strategy across mass-produced ukulele lines to create tiered options at modest cost difference.
