A concert ukulele with a solid spruce top over mahogany back and sides in a beach-themed graphic finish, using the same Graph Tech NuBone nut and saddle as Kala's higher-end instruments.
About the Kala KA-SURF
The Surf Series takes Kala's standard concert-size construction - spruce top over mahogany back and sides, mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard - and applies a surf/beach graphic satin finish (surfboard or wave motifs depending on the specific variant) rather than a plain natural or sunburst. Underneath the cosmetic theme, the build is genuinely mid-tier: Graph Tech NuBone nut and saddle rather than plastic, a full 18 frets, and Aquila Super Nylgut strings as stock equipment rather than cheaper nylon.
At a 14 13/16-inch scale, it's sized as a concert ukulele - the step up from soprano with a longer neck and wider fret spacing, generally considered an easier size for adult hands without losing the bright, chiming tone associated with smaller ukuleles. A single strap button is fitted as standard.

Sound character of the Kala KA-SURF
The spruce top gives a bright, chiming attack typical of concert ukuleles, while the mahogany back and sides add warmth and sustain that keeps the tone from becoming thin. Graph Tech NuBone nut and saddle transmit string energy more efficiently than plastic, giving cleaner note definition than budget-tier concert ukuleles.
