About the Fender Acoustasonic Player Telecaster

The Acoustasonic Player Telecaster has a fully hollow body with a specially tuned soundport, built to function as both an acoustic and an electric instrument rather than an electric guitar with an add-on piezo. Its electronics, co-developed by Fender and Fishman under the name "Acoustic Engine," combine a Tim Shaw-designed N4 noiseless magnetic pickup with a Fishman under-saddle piezo pickup, both drawing on Fender's patented Stringed Instrument Resonance System (SIRS) built into the top.

A three-position switch selects between voices: position 1 uses the N4 pickup alone for a conventional noiseless electric Telecaster tone, position 2 brings in the Fishman piezo for acoustic-leaning voices, and position 3 uses a dedicated Blend knob to mix between voicings modeled on a small-bodied short-scale acoustic and a rosewood dreadnought. A Master Volume control and a three-way pickup selector round out the controls, and the whole system runs on a 9-volt battery. The Player version is built in Fender's Ensenada, Mexico facility as a lower-priced alternative to the original American-made Acoustasonic Telecaster.

Sound character of the Fender Acoustasonic Player Telecaster

Unplugged, the Acoustasonic's thin, deliberately compact hollow chamber produces a quiet, fairly delicate acoustic tone rather than a full dreadnought-style projection - most of its character only reveals itself amplified, where the onboard Fishman system blends a modeled acoustic voice with magnetic single-coil tones via the mod knob. That modeling gives it a distinctly modern, hi-fi versatility that a traditional flat-top doesn't have.

The history of the Fender Acoustasonic Player Telecaster

Fender introduced the original Acoustasonic Telecaster at the 2019 NAMM Show, presenting it as a new instrument category rather than a variation on an existing model: a genuinely hollow-body guitar built to cover acoustic and electric tonal territory through a single, magnetically and piezo-driven pickup system rather than switching between separate instruments. It drew significant attention for both its sound-blending concept and its construction, and the platform was subsequently expanded to other Fender body shapes including the Stratocaster and Jazzmaster.

The Player Telecaster, built at Fender's newer Ensenada factory, extended the Acoustasonic concept to a more accessible price point, making the hybrid electronics and hollow-body construction available without the cost of the original US-made instrument while keeping the same core "Acoustic Engine" electronics developed with Fishman.
